Hot honey is a versatile condiment that can be used in so many ways! The sweet, spicy, and slightly tangy combination works well drizzled on top of pizza, fried chicken, biscuits, eggs, baked salmon, roasted vegetables, or mixed with mayonnaise to make a delicious spread for sandwiches. All you need are a 3 ingredients and less than 15 minutes to make this tasty condiment.
INGREDIENTS
- honey – I used clover honey because it tastes great and is easy to find
- dried pepper flakes – If you want to use fresh pepper, add 1 or 2 sliced jalapeños
- apple cider vinegar – you can substitute white vinegar
HOW TO MAKE HOT HONEY
STEP 1: Heat honey and dried pepper flakes in a small saucepan until it starts simmering, but not boiling. (1 to 2 minutes)
STEP 2: Remove from heat. Stir in the vinegar. Let the mixture cool for 10 minutes at room temperature. Transfer to an airtight, glass container.
You can choose to keep the pepper flakes in the honey or strain it out. It’s totally up to your preference. Keeping the pepper flakes in the honey will allow it to develop more heat as it sits. Hot honey made with dried peppers will keep for up to several months if properly stored in a cool, dry place.
Hot Honey
Ingredients
- 1 cup honey
- 2 tablespoons dried pepper flakes
- 2 teaspoons apple cider vinegar
Instructions
- Heat honey and dried pepper flakes in a small saucepan until it starts simmering, but not boiling. (1 to 2 minutes)
- Remove from heat. Stir in vinegar. Let the mixture cool for 10 minutes at room temperature.
- Strain honey to remove pepper flakes (optional). Store in an airtight glass jar.
Notes
- You can customize the spice level by adding more or less dried pepper flakes. Straining the honey will also prevent the honey from getting spicier as it sits in the jar.
- Store hot honey in a cool, dry place. It will keep for several months if properly stored.
- Hot honey can also be made with fresh chili peppers. Simply substitute the dried pepper flakes with 1 or 2 sliced jalapeño peppers (or chili pepper of your choice). Make sure to strain the honey to remove the fresh peppers, as they are perishable. Hot honey made with fresh peppers should be stored in the refrigerator.
